Web Host Options

Looking for a Web host?

You have a few options. For a Web site and WordPress.org blog combo,  I suggest Network Solutions. If you want just a WordPress.org blog, they can host it without the Web site. In this case the blog will be your Web site, and you’ll pay less money for this option.

If you want a free blog, try WordPress.com or Blogger.com. You don’t need a web host for WordPress.com or Blogger (owned by Google). I find Blogger easier to use than WordPress. For you ladies out there, check out Blog Her, whose mission is “to create opportunities for women who blog to gain exposure, education, community and economic empowerment.” (http://www.blogher.com/our-vision)

Hope this helps!

Learning WordPress

My first day with Network Solutions and WordPress

Well, the other day I purchased a WordPress hosting package through Network Solutions (NS). I was contemplating whether I should use the free WordPress blog (wordpress.com), get the hosted WordPress package from NS, or purchase a Web site and blog through NS. I decided to go with the hosted WordPress (WP) package.

Good decision? I’m not sure. The first day I crashed WP by installing one of the templates. I contacted both WP and NS for help. WordPress.com told me I needed to contact WordPress.org…you think they could have forwarded the message to WordPress.org on my behalf. (There’s a learning curve involved here!) Anyway, NS suggested that I reinstall WP, which I had already done, but it didn’t work. It did work today though! So, here I am blogging about it.

I think I might prefer the hosting package with the blog combo. Does anybody have this package? With the Web site, I can have separate pages for the classes I teach at MiraCosta College and Education to Go. I’m thinking I’ll have more flexibility with the combo package because I can insert my own code. The truth is that I don’t know WordPress well enough to know if it’s enough for me. Comments about your experience with a hosted Web site/blog combo vs. a WordPress blog by itself would truly help!

Thanks,

Kathy
